Summary

Vuer LLC is a US-based startup pioneering the concept of Extended TV (XTV), an evolution within OTT streaming that integrates mobile-based capabilities into the streaming experience. XTV will give users the ability to personalize, interact with, and learn more about their favorite content and ads, all in the same OTT ecosystem.

The company has patented and developed minimum viable versions of the XTV Suite, which will ultimately consist of four software components: Extended Ads, Extended View, Extended Sites, and Extended Accessibility.

Extended Ads will be the first component to be released in Q2 2025. This is in response to the OTTs’ priority to increase the profitability of their ad inventories. Extended View will follow in 2026 to boost engagement by enabling users to switch and rotate cameras on-demand from their mobile device.

In 2028 we plan to release Extended Sites, streamlining access to AI-generated websites that will feature digital content in connection with the user’s stream—bios, stats, trivia, and more. The XTV Suite will be complete in 2029 with the release of the Extended Accessibility component, which will enable OTTs to support subtitles in dozens of additional languages, dubbed audio with the subject’s original voice, and an AI-based sign language interpreter.

The goal is to build and release these components over five years, offering them to the same clientele of leading OTTs, such as Netflix, Disney+, and Pluto TV.

Situation

  • Connected TV (CTV) remains the only digital medium unable to offer advertisers a clickable ad unit at scale.

  • The absence of reliable and effective ad conversion mechanisms on CTV only tells advertisers half the story they need to gauge their return on ad spend.

  • Brands experimenting with so-called interactive ads require the creation of new brand assets and re-layouts that undermine the impact of the main video asset.

  • Advertisers are less willing to pay higher CPMs (cost per thousand ad impressions) on CTV without more precise metrics for ad effectiveness.

  • Competitors are automating the insertion of QR codes in CTV ads to track engagement, rushing users to execute 4-5 steps before the ad runs out of time. Unsurprisingly, this method has achieved only a 0.1% success rate.

  • Inserting QR codes and other interactive components reduces the video ad to a smaller size and overwhelms users with additional messaging.

Solution

Streamlining ad conversion on CTV with minimum effort from users and advertisers

The existence of interactive CTV ads confirms the pressing need among advertisers to measure ad effectiveness with more precision—similar to that found in other digital channels like display, online video, and social.

This ad format, however, forces marketers to produce new creative and buy longer ad units, only to hope that users are quick enough to complete 4-5 steps in a very short window of time—from the moment they decide to learn more about the ad to the moment the ad ends.

Extended Ads will instead use the existing creative and metadata provided by marketers in their regular CTV campaign planning. Meanwhile, users will only need to take two simple steps: Clicking the “OK” button on their TV remote and then tapping a push notification on their mobile device.

More efficient, more effective, and completely non-intrusive.

  • Vuer’s ad conversion method will be based on minimal effort from the user. Two steps on CTV and just one on mobile.

  • Marketers won’t need to create new assets or layouts and still achieve more by keeping their existing spot full-screen.

  • Most ads running on CTV are booked with a clickthrough URL that doesn’t make it into the CTV ad serving, given that CTV ads aren’t clickable. However, Extended Ads will be, so we’ll leverage that data to streamline URL access via a push notification.

  • OTTs have internal sales teams tasked with placing premium inventory with key advertisers and media agencies.

    Activating a harder-working ad unit will afford them more leverage to sell a bigger portion of the inventory at higher CPMs (cost per thousand impressions).

  • The solution will be installed as a software extension to adapt to any operating system and be platform agnostic for any OTT to implement.

  • The Extended Ads SDK will be based on an open-source standard named SIMID, which allows CTV ads to be interactive, recognizing commands given by the TV remote.

    The integration of the push notification on the OTT’s mobile app is equally non-invasive, given it will never launch the OTT but the web browser, allowing the OTT app to remain only as a trusted source for the user.
